Emmitt Matthews Commits to UConn

UConn has another commitment for the class of 2018 in west coast wing Emmitt Matthews, currently the 147th-ranked player in the nation according to Rivals. The Tacoma, Washington native chose the Huskies over offers from Georgetown, Washington, and West Virginia, among others.

Matthews joins California point guard James Akinjo on UConn's commitment list for the class of 2018.

Rivals' national analyst Corey Evans calls Matthews an "underrated wing" who "is most valuable for his long-term upside and shot making skills on the perimeter."

"Just being out here, I feel like I am with a family," Matthews told Evans. "I like being with everyone here and the atmosphere is just phenomenal. Everything is just right for me. I have known Chill for a long time and with coach (Kevin) Ollie, it just explains itself. I just didn’t want to pass it up."

UConn's newest assistant coach, Raphael Chillious, led Matthews' recruitment. Chillious had been in touch while he was an assistant coach at Washington and re-engaged in July.

"I have always liked [UConn] ever since Kemba Walker and Shabazz Napier. I started watching them a lot around then," Matthews told Rivals earlier this month.

After watching him this summer, Rivals' Eric Bossi said: "He's not a finished product, but [Matthews] has real upside. He's pushing 6-foot-7, is a fluid athlete and has potential as a slasher who makes enough shots to keep defenses honest."
