ALBANY, N.Y. – Dan Hurley has pulled in a big one.
The second-year UConn head coach landed his first commitment for the 2020 class with four-star wing Andre Jackson announcing Wednesday at the Albany Academy for Boys that he will be a Husky next season.
UConn, which has one additional open scholarship for next year, landed Jackson over Syracuse, Iowa, and UCLA. Jackson made an official visit to Storrs two weeks ago, and was reportedly seen again on campus this past weekend after cancelling a trip to Iowa.
The Orange were believed to be the other finalist for Jackson, who ranks 76th in the Class of 2020.
His addition will give the Huskies an explosive young nucleus with Jalen Gaffney and James Bouknight having a year under their belts by then along with junior point guard R.J. Cole, who is sitting out this season after arriving from Howard.
Redshirt junior Alterique Gilbert could also be in the mix. Gilbert graduates next May but has the option for staying for a fifth season of eligibility if he choices.
Regardless of Gilbert’s status, the addition of then 6-foot-7 Jackson was a huge priority for the Huskies. Now the Huskies can turn their attention to landing a big man.
One of the players UConn has targeted is 6-11 center Cliff Omoruyi, who ranks 54th in the Class of 2020. The Roselle Catholic (N.J.) senior has been on the UConn campus, but has yet to make an official visit.
If the Huskies want Omoruyi they will have to get in line and wait. The big man announced three days ago on Twitter that he won’t decide until the spring.
In addition to UConn, a host of schools remain in the mix including Arizona State, Auburn, Kentucky, Louisville, Maryland, Memphis, Miami, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Stanford, and Temple.
Other UConn targets for 2020 include 6-9 Northside (Ar.) Jaylin Williams, 6-10 McEachern (Ga.) center Dylan Cardwell and 7-0 Josh Gray, from the Knox School. Cardwell, who ranks 115th in the Class of 2020, is scheduled to visit UConn this weekend.
Williams recently narrowed his list to seven schools, with UConn making the cut along with Arkansas, Auburn, Illinois, Iowa State, Oklahoma State and Texas A&M.
