It wasn’t the prettiest at times, but UConn handled business in its first home game under new HC Jim Mora, defeating CCSU 28-3 in front of 22,442 people at Pratt and Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field. There was a nervousness in the air as the Huskies went into the half up only 7-3, turning the ball over deep in Blue Devil territory twice in the first half.

CCSU received the ball to start the 2nd half, and marched downfield with little resistance. After a sack by Dal’Mont Gourdine pinned the Blue Devils back a bit, then a 22 yard field goal attempt hit the upright. CCSU would get no closer to scoring, as the UConn defense clamped down.

I’m his first collegiate start, Zion Turner threw for 172 yards, 2 TDs and an INT, although a costly one in the end zone to end the first half. His yardage was buoyed by a 42 yard connection with Aaron Turner. Nate Carter, coming off a 190 yard performance last week against Utah State, ran for 123 yards, 1 TD, but more importantly, no fumbles.

Pros:

Running game continued to excel, racking up 274 yards

Linebacking corps was strong again. Jackson Mitchell led the team with 6 tackles

D-line had 3 sacks, after only recording one against Utah State

Special teams got a piece of a CCSU punt

Brandon Bouyer-Randle recorded his first interception as a Husky

Cons:

Zion Turner had two turnovers, which could’ve been avoided

CCSU was able to move the ball pretty easily in the first half. Only resulted in 3 points of course, but not what you want to see

Noe Ruelas’ 1st half FG attempt was blocked

After a stellar punt return of 27 yards by Dajon Harrison, a sack and fumble wasted the field position

Harrison’s next punt return should’ve been fair caught, and the result was a fumble, giving CCSU the ball at midfield after having to punt from their own end zone
