It's that time of year again where rumors begin swirling about conference realignment possibilities and which schools could be on the move next. Some of the most recent rumors that have been circulating include the idea of the Uconn Huskies potentially joining a Power-five Conference.
Before we jump into where UConn could head next, let's take a look at what's going on elsewhere to impact the Huskies potential future conference home.
The Big Ten and the SEC are making serious moves as they continue to build their super conferences by plucking schools from the Big 12 and the PAC-12, with the latest report from Brett McMurphy saying that the Big Ten has "vetted and cleared" both Oregon and Washington as the next two potential additions.
Now how does this all play into UConn's favor? According to Ross Dellenger of Sports Illustrated, the Huskies are one of a few targets for the Big 12 Conference as they hope to expand to upwards of 14 or 16 total members.
Dellenger says the top priority for the conference right now is Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Utah, but they have several other targets including UConn.
"UConn, the reigning men’s basketball champions, is a play for a foothold in the Northeast as well as adding another basketball powerhouse to what currently is the best hoops league in the country," he says.
The Big 12 is arguably the current top basketball conference in the country, but that tends to flip flop from year to year. However from a football standpoint, it would help get Jim Mora Jr. and the program into a Power-five Conference which would massively help their recruiting efforts.
In terms of geographically? That's a different question entirely, but if other conferences can make it work with significantly more traveling, than there is no reason that the Huskies and the Big 12 couldn't make it work.
Some of the other schools said to be targeted by the Big 12 include San Diego State, UNLV and Memphis. There are others on top as well to keep an eye on, but Dellenger insists they are further down the list.
