Skanes, a 3-star wide receiver from Chicago, chose UConn over Northwestern and Central Michigan. He also had offers from Illinois, Wyoming and a number of other schools in the MAC.
A shifty wide receiver and big-time playmaker, Skanes spoke to UConn Report after putting UConn in his final three and making a visit to Storrs.
Skanes made his first trip to the Northeast on the visit to UConn, and really liked the college town environment in Storrs over the pace in his hometown Chicago. He also expressed a desire to "make a name for myself at a place that many don't know about."
Standing at 5-foot-10, 170 pounds, Skanes will play wide receiver out of the slot and also be a factor on both kick and punt returns. One can't help but get excited about the element he could bring to a UConn offense which has been admonished for being so bland since the Randy Edsall era.
Skanes spoke with UConn Report after making his commitment. He was both excited and relieved.
"It's a stressful process, but I'm feeling very relaxed now and very excited about my decision."
The biggest factors in his decision to choose UConn were his relationship with the coaches and the opportunity to make an impact.
"Those conversations were about what they could do with my talent and how much I mean to them is what they explained to me."
While the Chicago native admitted it was difficult to turn down the offer from his hometown Northwestern, he said UConn fit better with his personality. He also wants to be a part of building a winning football program.
"I'm making the commitment to making the school better. I know people sleep on them, but I like their style and where they're heading."
Skanes is the second wide receiver to commit to UConn for the Class of 2016, joining in-state prospect Keyion Dixon. He also continues to expand UConn's geographic footprint. The class now has one verbal commitment each from Virginia, Connecticut, New Jersey and now Illinois.
