UConn offers NJ DE

While the name Peter Firestone is definitely a new one for UConn fans, it is not a new one for the UConn coaching staff, who have been keeping a close eye on the New Jersey defensive end for months. Recently the staff decided to offer so UConnReport.com spoke to Firestone about the recent developments.
"Coach Brown visited campus on October 2nd and I got an offer from them this past Friday," said Firestone, who is 6-foot-6 and 255 pounds. "I have been talking to them since February."
Interacting with UConn since February, Firestone has become very comfortable with the coaching staff.
"I have had the pleasure of getting to know Coach Poindexter and Coach Brown during the past year, through their campus visits as well as phone conversations," he said. "One of the biggest things they have expressed to me is that UConn football is a family. They want smart, tough players that love football, and I feel like I could absolutely be one of those guys for them."
Firestone has yet to visit UConn, but is hoping to change that soon. With a game on Saturday, Firestone is looking into taking a visit to Storrs on either Sunday or Monday.
"I'm not able to see a game, because we are playing Peddie this Saturday," he said. "I'm looking forward to seeing the campus, getting to meet more players and coaches, and learning more about what it is like to play for UConn."
With UConn grabbing two Lawrenceville Prep players in the Class of 2014, Firestone was asked if he has chatted with either about the Huskies.
"I haven't gotten much of a chance to talk to Sheriden [Lawley] or Tony [Watkins] yet, but I am looking forward to seeing them this weekend once I confirm my visit," said Firestone, who was actually born and raised in Arizona.
Besides UConn, Firestone also has offers from Cornell and Davidson, plus he has been receiving steady interest from Cincinnati, UCF, NC State, Rutgers and Temple. He mentioned that every school is recruiting him as a defensive end.
On the field this fall, Firestone is happy with how he and his team are progressing.
"Our first three out of league games were challenging for us," he said. I think we learned a lot and got better from those experiences, and now have the opportunity to compete in a five-game playoff for our Mid Atlantic Prep League (MAPL) Title. We beat Mercersburg this past weekend which was our first MAPL win, and play Peddie this weekend at home. Personally, I think I've played well up to this point. It has been an honor to lead our team thus far as one of the captains, and I am looking forward to constantly improving into the second half of our season."
Because of some tough off-season workouts, Firestone has noticed improvements in his game.
"This offseason I made it a goal of mine to get after it in the weight room," he said. "I put on 30-pounds since last season, and this added strength and power is definitely noticeable on the field."
UConnReport.com will check back with Firestone after his upcoming visit to UConn.
