UConn Basketball Commit, Top Targets Now At Brewster Academy

Since he was a callow and unproven 14-year-old freshman sporting size 15 sneakers at Scotland Campus, Solomon Ball possessed a rarefied feel for the game.

Ball is the son of a local Virginia basketball trainer. The skill components of the game and work rate have always been two areas the 6-foot-3, Class of 2023 UConn-commit has placed emphasis on.

As the focal point at St. James (Va.) this past season, Ball improved physically and with his vertical explosiveness. Both aspects enabled him to put his stamp on games, as he developed a killer instinct as a scorer and subsequently emerged as one of the country's top rebounding guards.

While memorable UConn guards such as AJ Price from Amityville, NY and Kemba Walker from New York City came in as highly coveted recruits, Ball's story is different. His game cloaked in obscurity until a wild 2022 summer eruption put him under a national microscope.

As a dazzlingly athletic and heady lead guard, the left handed Ball averaged 18.9 points for Team Melo during the first two EYBL Sessions in Orlando, Fla. and then Indianapolis.

With his 6-foot-10 wingspan, extravagant above rim explosiveness and tactical three level scoring arsenal, Ball quickly blossomed into one of the nation's top guards. His improvement as a ball hawking defender and a consistent rebounder is ultimately what caught the attention of UConn's staff. He also developed a rapport with UConn assistant Luke Murray, who watched him throughout the EYBL circuit."

With Team Melo I'm able to play my game and impact all parts of the game," said Ball, who is now at national power Brewster Academy (NH) under Jason Smith.

"I'm able to use my athleticism and crash the glass at will. I have a green light to shoot and my coaches trust me with the ball in my hands."

It's rare for a player to have such a rapid ascension in the recruitment process, especially in an era where freshman and sophomores and even eighth graders pick up high major offers during the embryonic stages of the process.

Ball picked up offers from DePaul, Virginia Tech, Providence, Clemson, USC, Georgia Tech, Pittsburgh, UVA, and a variety of others from the time his junior year started to when he wrapped up the summer AAU season. UConn got a stock riser, one who may have slipped through the cracks in regard to the national rankings."Solo has a very bright future," Smith said."He’s an explosive athlete, which is noticeable on both ends of the floor. High character kid who possesses a tremendous work ethic and desire to improve."

Smith's program is again teeming with high major talent. Ball will orchestrate a souped up offensive attack. He has help from a UConn target in 6-foot-6 guard/wing Aaron Clark.

A 6-foot-6 shot maker with good concepts of the game as a scorer and a creator, the Class of 2023 Clark brings versatility on both ends of the floor.

He recently wrapped up an official visit to the University of Miami. Clark garnered UConn's attention this summer, playing for the NY Rens on the AAU scene.
