Quick Hits: Lloyd gets a look

STORRS, Conn. – A sampling of quick hits around Memorial Stadium from Friday's practice:

Lloyd gets a look: Count linebacker Greg Lloyd as among the upper flight of true freshmen who may get a chance to play this season and avoid the redshirt.

Lloyd, a 6-foot-2, 233-pounder from Clermont (Fla.) East Ridge, was playing in the absence of Ryan Henegan, who, despite being listed as day-to-day, showed up at the field today wearing a large brace and compression sleeve on his knee.

Head coach Randy Edsall said the quick promotion for Lloyd was due to his work ethic and excellent work in the team's drills.

"I think Greg has done a good job, and because of what we've seen of him on the field, I wanted to take a look at him on that first group [and] see how he responds," Edsall said. "I've been impressed with his football speed and his football playing ability. Things are still, I'm sure, scrambled in his mind, because a lot's been thrown at him, but one thing I do like is that when the ball is snapped, he's got very good speed to get to the football."

Injury concerns: In addition to Henegan, it was also revealed Friday that true freshman Isiah Moore, a 6-foot-2, 188-pound wide receiver from Cambridge, Mass., has an injured shoulder and will miss the entire season after having surgery next Tuesday.

"He had a loose shoulder coming in, a little bit, and then he hurt it, so he's going to end up having surgery on that," Edsall said. "We said 'Hey, we're going to get it done,' so this way he'll be ready to go by mid-December so he'll be full-go in January with winter workouts and everything."

Also sitting out was Matt Ashmead, who had an undisclosed injury, and Greg Robinson, who is also day-to-day. Cody Brown, who worked early in the practice with the rest of the defensive line, halted activity before the first hour ended and spent much of the rest of the session in the medical tent.

Making a switch: Bloomfield's Marcus Campbell, brought in to UConn as a defensive end, officially made the switch to Husky linebacker this week after he was spotted working out with the outside linebackers.

"He's going to be an outside linebacker," Edsall said. "We moved him to the Husky position, so he's going to end up being a Husky."

Campbell, a 6-foot-2, 220-pound prospect, played defensive end in high school.

Run it: With the suspension of running back Andre Dixon due to a violation of team rules, true freshman Robbie Frey has slid comfortably into the No. 3 running back spot. Edsall was uncertain as to whether or not Frey would hold that job when Dixon returns, but did say both he and Kelmetrus Wylie have impressed him so far.

Dixon and safety Corey Stringer were suspended on Wednesday for an indeterminate period of time. Edsall refused to comment on the length of the suspensions at Friday's practice, but speculation said the duo was suspended for breaking a time commitment and would return to practice shortly.

Parking plan: Fans who preferred to park in the area known as the Knoll at Rentschler Field last season will be able to do so for the entire 2007 season under an agreement reached by new stadium operator Northland AEG, the Connecticut Office of Policy Management, the university, The Matos Group and United Technologies Corporation, the developers and owners of the property. The Knoll will be designated as the Purple lot.

As a result, the Brown lot, known as the Aircraft Club, will not be used for parking this season. Other parking policies can be reviewed at the official site of Rentschler Field, RentschlerField.com.

In the family: Megan Cersosimo, the wife of wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator Matt Cersosimo, gave birth to the couple's first child, a son named Brady, late Friday afternoon. Megan, the head lacrosse coach at UConn, was due Monday. Matt has been away from the team since Wednesday.

Kicks and punts: Edsall stated his preference Friday for having the three kickers – junior Tony Ciaravino, sophomore Desi Cullen and freshman Dave Teggart – not tie themselves up in holding the punting, kicking and kickoff duties.

To date, Cullen has all but locked up the job as a starting punter and is close to doing so on kickoffs, with Teggart having his best day of the preseason Friday afternoon. But Edsall said at Monday's media day event that the kicking job will come down to the player with the most consistency, which at that point was Ciaravino.
