Michigan trounces UConn Football by a final score of 59-0

Michigan was a 47.5 favorite against UConn, and they proved why pretty quickly in a 59-0 victory. Ranked 4th in the nation, Michigan received the opening kick and went 72 yards in four plays over just a couple minutes of a game time for its first touchdown. It would not be their last. UConn struggled to move the ball, earning just four 1st downs in the first half. Zion Turner threw for only 12 yards, while Nate Carter rushed for 21, sitting out much of the half with an injury.

Michigan QB JJ McCarthy was 10/13 172 yards but no TDs. All of the touchdowns came on the ground and on special teams, as the Huskies allowed four TDs to RB Blake Corum, and a 61 yard punt return for a TD by AJ Henning in the first half. Michigan beat the Huskies through the air, with big plays of 38, 31, and 28 to WRs Roman Wilson, Luke Schoonmaker, and Ronnie Bell, respectively.

The Huskies couldn’t afford to make any mistakes in a game like this, and unfortunately, they made several. True freshman Victor Rosa, forced into action with the injury to Nate Carter, fumbled a handoff giving Michigan the ball deep in UConn territory. Rosa also fumbled on a double reverse, handing the ball off to Dajon Harrison out of his reach. Harrison was able to recover, but had to take a loss of 10 yards on the first drive of the second half. Zion Turner also fumbled a snap, but was able to recover.

Cade McNamara came out as QB to end the first half, but McCarthy came back to start the second. On Michigan’s first drive, the Wolverines continued to move largely unimpeded down field, ending an 11 play 83 yard drive with Corum’s fifth TD of the day, giving Michigan a 45-0 lead. Michigan came back with their backups, with 3rd string QB Davis Warren making an appearance. Warren and freshman QB Alex Orji would lead the Wolverines to another TD, with Orji rushing in from the 10, aided by a missed tackle that would’ve led to a loss.

The Wolverines would go through eight QBs on the day. Earlier in the week, Jim Mora explained that the Huskies are at a disadvantage only having 105 players on the roster. Michigan has significantly more players than that. One of many reasons for the chasm between the two programs. It doesn’t get any easier for the Huskies, as they travel to 16th ranked NC State next Saturday at 7:30.
