UConn Coach Jim Calhoun has been on the record in recent weeks saying that the Huskies are looking to add one more player to next year's roster. The one question mark has been-Who will that player be?
In the class of 2011 only two of the Rivals Top 100 players, DeAndre Daniels and Joseph Uchebo, remain unsigned. Daniels had UConn in his list of schools during their March Madness run, but shortly after the title run UConn dropped off his list. Daniels' recruiting history has been nothing short of a rollercoaster anyways, so counting on him at this point would be a risky move. As for Uchebo, it was announced a few days ago that he will have to go to junior college next season.
There's always the possibility of a transfer player coming in and getting a waiver to play immediately. However, those options look few and far between.
With all of this in mind, Calhoun and his staff went a little outside of the box over the weekend, and offered a scholarship to Mitch McGary. The catch to this of course is that McGary is listed as a 2012 player. However, since McGary has already graduated high school, he would be eligible to play in 2011. As such the Huskies have offered him a spot on their team for this coming season.
As of now, there is no news out of the McGary camp on this offer. We will have more as this situation develops.
