Agau gets Iowa offer
The interest level in Akoy Agau was bound to start rising and this fall it is certainly picking up. The talented 2013 prospect from Omaha made his way to Iowa City this past weekend and picked up an offer from Coach Fran McCaffery while he was in town.
"They said they would like me to consider Iowa and they offered me a scholarship," said the 6-foot-7 forward. "It was nice to get the offer."
Overall he enjoyed learning more about the Iowa Basketball program and hearing from the coaches about their vision for the future.
"It was fun to get down there and talk to the coaches and watch practice on Saturday," he said. "They just talked about the program, the style of play, how they are trying to build it, and the new facilities."
One part of Iowa's sales pitch that really caught Agau's eye was the new practice facility, which is scheduled to open next summer. Agau has become a real gym rat in the last year and wherever he ends up, he plans to spend a lot of time working on improving his game.
"I like that the new practice facility and they said that when it opens up it will be open 24/7. They might have to give me a bed in there because I would be in there all the time."
Iowa has picked up their interest in the past few months and assistant coach Kirk Speraw was out at Omaha Central High School for an open gym a couple of weeks ago.
With the Iowa offer, Agau is up to eight scholarship offers. The list of schools offering includes: Iowa, Creighton, Indiana State, Colorado State, Nebraska, Marquette, Loyola, and New Mexico. He plans to visit Iowa State this coming weekend and is also planning a trip to New Mexico on November 12th. This fall he has been to the Nebraska campus a few times, including visiting for the Huskers game against Texas. He is also a regular visitor to Creighton to play pickup basketball.
His recruitment is in the early stages and Agau says he doesn't have a favorite, but he is comparing and contrasting his visits.
Among the other visitors this past weekend to Iowa City was Agau's good friend, Peter Jok, who is a highly ranked national prospect from Des Moines in the Class of 2013.
"Peter and I are good friends and we were together all day. Iowa offered him as well," Agau said. "We will be playing AAU Basketball together and I am really looking forward to it. I think we will have a pretty good team."
